David, this is awesome. Just one question… did you select the films? If so, great job but I would have like to have seen A Clockwork Orange on there.

Thanks Suzy. Well no I didn’t choose the movies, the picks are from IMDb.com top 250… so that’s why… wait a minute… A Clockwork Orange IS on the list, so it should be on the map ! Thanks for noticing, I’ll correct it very quickly.
There may be a few mistakes like this one left.

Well I actually watch films and I would have gladly pick a few Bresson’s movies instead of Besson’s but the deal was to make the map with the top 250 has voted by IMDb users…

This is really great!!
I think that I will print it on a large paper somehow and hand it somewhere.
I think there is one small mistake though – I think that you switched between « Fight Club » and « Eternal Sunshine.. ». Fight Club is not a romance film, and thus shouldn’t be on Line2; while « Eternal.. » is a romance film but may also be a (Line12) weird drama (on the other hand it is not dark so maybe it isn’t that suitable). for your consideration.

The Fight Club thing is one of my personnal tricky choices (as well as Rear Window on 1 bis and kill bill 2 on 5). To my opinion Fight Club is mostly a romance, a deep psychological thought of what love meant at the very end of the chaotic 20th century. Anyway Eternal sunshine could be on weird drama too.

Superb effort… some very clever categorisations there, but I have a couple of suggestions for the next version.
If you extend the Romance line to run alongside the World Cinema line, you could set up intersections for Slumdog Millionaire (whose creators have publicly described it as a romance), the African Queen (whose climactic scene is the wedding of the two main characters) and even – pushing it a bit – Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I’m not sure why Rear Window is in the « Masterpiece about Showbusiness » category. LB Jeffries is a photographer and Lisa Fremont is a socialite – neither with strong ties to showbiz – and the movie itself is a crime drama with a heavy element of romance. Not sure how you’d work the topology to put it on lines 1, 2 and 7, though.
Finally, Dr Strangelove is so much more than just a war movie – it’s also one of the funniest films ever made. Run the comedy track next to the war track for one more stop and justice can be served. You know it makes sense.
But these are only small suggestions in the context of a great effort. Well done!

great job! though obviously a labor of love, slap a copywrite on that puppy, contact a publisher, and get yourself into college bookstores. you’ve got a best seller on your hands, especially on campuses with functioning mass transit, such as nyc, chicago and london.

hi,
an interesting idea, but for the top250 from imdb i’d rather have an historical approach, because genre evolved and developed over the decades. so i won’t criticize certain strange effects in your map, but the most interesting part for me is the 20 categories you’ve chosen. i myself have a movie collection in 24 genre-like-categories, with some similarities. maybe we can try to gather and discuss different concepts of categorization, to improve our systems.
First of all, when it comes to masterpieces, I differentiate between decades, because an all time classic from the 70s is way different from an all time classic in the 90s. Quite clear categories are romance, comedy and animation, for which i have exact equivalences. I was most surprised that you have a category for War, just like I have – apparently war movies have something special about them, and are recognized in our culture. I have another genre called Violence, for all the movies that are built around violent behavior on an emotional level, like La Haine, Romper Stomper, Bang Bang you are dead, American History X, etc.
What I’d like to discuss is the sub-categories for drama. You have chosen to distinct Political drama, Tolerance drama and Dark/Weird drama, from Classical Drama. In contrast I chose in my system a distinction between Historical drama, Life drama, Disorder drama. I think categories like Political and Tolerance look at the aim of a movie, instead of how the movies themselves differ in style. I chose Historical drama for all movies that try to tell about historical events of our world, Life drama for movies that try to tell us something about how life can be sometimes, and Disorder drama for movies that tell us about psychological disorders, that alter the view on reality. My equivalent for Dark/Weird drama is called « Psycho drama », for all movies that really disturb you in a negative way
I think that each genre can be utilized for aims of movie creation like teaching about tolerance, history, politics, disorders, war and other aspects of life, but for me a genre is question of what instruments are used to achieve this goal.
In parallel to the historic timeline of masterpieces, I think for a useful genre system on a broader database than imdbtop250, it is necessary to use special regional categories. In different countries and regions certain styles have been established, that can’t be explained easily in classic genre terms. Like Austrian cinema has always a very sarcastic/ironic humor, in combination with quite heavy topics and without happy ends. That’s why I use special categories not only for Austrian movies, but also for Scandinavian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, German and British cinema. These reflect only my personal tendencies, there’s way more regional categories to be used, to assist the classic genre categorization.
so here is my list (only including those genres that I personally have a faible for):
80s, 90s, 00s, anime, art, biography, british, chinese, comedy, german, disorder, documentary, epic tale, historical drama, japanese, korean, life drama, austrian, psycho drama, romance, scandinavian, violence, war.
